What is Meridia?

Meridia is the brand name of the prescription diet drug sibutramine hydrochloride monohydrate, manufactured by Abbot Labrotories. Meridia is the first serotonin reuptake inhibitor used for the treatment of obesity. The diet pill is in the form of a capsule and should be administered orally.

How does Meridia work?

Meridia aids in weight loss by regulating serotonin levels in the brain that control appetite. It does this by slowing the depletion of serotonin levels produced by the brain. This results in weight loss.

What are possible side effects of taking Meridia?

  • appetite irregularity
  • constipation
  • heartburn
  • dryness of mouth
  • weakness
  • back pain
  • nervousness
  • insomnia
  • runny nose
  • flu-like symptoms
  • flushing
  • painful menstrual periods

Meridia should be prescribed to overweight individuals would like to lose and maintain their weight loss. Meridia is an appetite suppressant and should be used in combination with excercise and a reduced calorie diet. It works by suppressing appetite control centers in the brain.

What should I do if I forget a dose?

If you've missed a dose you may take it as soon as you remember. However, it's almost time to take the next dose, skip it and continue with the regular schedule of dosage. Do not double dose.
